Seongju-shin, one of the gods worshiped by the households rooted in Korean totemism, is known as the first being to have created a house and as the protector of the well-being of the family that resides in it.
Enshrined in the form of a jar or a bag containing rice, Seongju-shin protects humans by acquiring a new body every year when fresh rice is harvested. It is only through the constant care of humans that it becomes a being that looks after them in return.
This is how I came to create this statue, which was sculpted just before moving to New York.
Covered with rice, it will ripen by the following year and will wear a new body when fresh rice is harvested each fall, with hope that my life in the new home will be smooth.
